Ruth Campell Bigelow - A true pioneer in the tea industry, it was her imagination and incredible drive that founded this company and eventually led to a major change in the United States tea business
Where it all began, 241 E. 60th Street Manhattan, N.Y.C (1945 -1950)
Our first factory on Hoyt Street in Norwalk, CT. (1950 - 1957)
Early "Constant Comment" packages (1945 -1955)
Our first attempts at tea bags. Tea bags were produced off premises and brought to Norwalk where they were hand packed into canisters. (1956)
Our first production line on Hoyt Street. All loose tea in those days. (1951)
Our home on Merwin Street, Norwalk for 33 years (1957 - 1990) many additions (not shown) were built over those years to the far side of the building to accommodate our company as it grew.
No computers in those days. Everything was done manually with lots of overflowing files. (1960)
A display of Bigelow® Teas at the Fancy Food Show in mid-fifties. As you can see, the line has grown.
From 1945 -1947, we drop shipped most orders by Parcel Post or U.P.S. At one time, we were delivering tea to some 15,000 individual stores.
A big moment in history... Our first tea bag machine. (1958)
Our delivery dock in 1960. Orders going out, deliveries coming in.
After some 40 years in Norwalk, 7 years on Hoyt Street and 33 years on Merwin Street, we moved everything, lock, stock and barrel to Fairfield, CT in May of 1990. Our new headquarters building is home for our Operations Division, our Finance Division and for the Sales and Marketing arm of the Company. The Tea Division with beautiful test kitchens and state-of-the-art computerized tea blending tower also calls Fairfield home. Last but by no means least, this facility produces and distributes over one-third of the tea bags R.C. Bigelow, Inc. sells each year.
Little did we know when we came to Boise, Idaho in 1984 that not only was Boise on the threshold of remarkable growth but so were we. It all began very modestly with a fifteen thousand foot distribution center created to service our many fine customers in the west...and then ...we decided to put in a couple of tea bag machines. Well, the rest is history. Today we have a beautiful facility that houses a sizeable number of our tea bag machines and produces over fifty percent of our company's annual tea bag requirements. All of our iced tea production is also located in this plant. We feel very fortunate as a company to have found the warm and hospitable city of Boise.
Louisville, like Boise, began very modestly as a distribution center for Bigelow® Tea for the mid - west. For 5 years we rented in a small industrial park; but several years ago, with growth pushing out the walls, we decided to build a new facility. Our new building, completed in 1993, conveniently located on a brand new street called "Constant Comment Way", has been busy making tea bags, gifts and much of our company's specialty work.
