In my position as the CEO of my family company, I learned lessons they don’t teach you at Wharton and Stanford, when I traveled to West Virginia with several hundred teenagers and fellow advisors for a week.

t was my 12th year participating in the Appalachia Service Project (ASP), a national program that offers a glimpse of life that many of us are unfamiliar with. Over the years, I’ve met countless committed individuals — adults and teenagers — who give their time to engage in a week of rather challenging work, rebuilding the homes and helping the people who’ve been living in extremely difficult circumstances from significant health issues to abject poverty. At that same time, it occurred to me that the experience offers lessons about life and leadership that could benefit our country’s corporate executives, and certainly our politicians.
