FAQs
Tea and Herbal Tea Ingredients
Our teas are available to all major grocery chains, but there could be an out of stock issue, or they may choose not to carry a particular flavor. We have found that most store managers want to please their customers. We suggest that you ask the manager where you frequently shop to check with his/her distributor to see if he/she can order the tea of your choice.
As a courtesy, we sell our teas directly to consumers by the case. A case is made up of six individual boxes of one kind of tea. You can order directly from us through our web site, www.bigelowtea.com, or by calling our toll free number, 1-888-BIGELOW (1-888-244-3569). This number is available Monday through Thursday, 9:00 am -5:00 pm ET and Friday 9:00am-2:00pm ET. The price of our tea ranges from $20.95-$60.95 handling charges. For your convenience, you may pay by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, check, or money order.

We guarantee the freshness of all our retail, individually wrapped teas for three years from the time of production. After the three-year period, the tea will be perfectly safe to drink, but the flavor may
not be as robust.
You can identify the year that the product was manufactured by the Code # located on the box, usually appearing under the bar code. (example: Code#1614567HIJ4 12:45) This code has ten characters, with
the last number representing the year. The four digits following Code # is the time stamp. If the last number is 4, for example, the product was manufactured in 2024. If it is 3, the year of production was 2023; If it is 2, the year of production was 2022. This code can also be found on the individual foil teabags, which is a printed number.
Example: 15792363A1 = January 29th, 2021
All tea is processed from the same bush called Camellia Sinensis. White tea is tea made from new growth buds and young leaves of the plant. The leaves are steamed or fried to inactivate oxidation, and then dried. Green Tea is processed by steaming and scalding the tea leaves for several minutes; they are then rolled and dried. Black Teas go through a different process; the tea leaves are not steamed, but are oxidized or fermented and then dried. The fourth type of tea, which is oolong, goes through the same process as black tea, but it is only oxidized for half the time.
Oil of bergamot is a natural product derived from the Citrus bergamia tree produced from the small pear shaped fruit of the tree. The tree is grown primarily in Italy and South America.
A natural flavor means that every part of the
"flavor" is derived from the actual item itself. If it is a natural
orange flavor, then all of the components that make up the flavor MUST come
from orange.
The natural flavors contained in our teas do not contain
any chemical ingredients. The flavors do not contain MSG, artificial colors or
preservatives.
While the majority of our teas with flavors are naturally flavored, we do have a few legacy recipes that still contain artificial flavors Artificial flavors are created to taste like those natural extracts through synthetic methods.
Please be assured that we use only high quality flavors from reputable suppliers who provide us with a certificate of purity and authenticity with each shipment we receive from them.

When Bigelow decides to discontinue a particular tea, it is due to the annual sales not being met for an item, which is necessary to continue the manufacturing of a product.
We understand that these items could be favorites amongst our valued consumers, and we would suggest that if you can no longer find your favorite flavor in your local stores, you can check the availability to buy directly from us. It is possible we may still have inventory of a discontinued item. We sell our teas directly to consumers by the case. A case is made up of six individual boxes, of one kind of tea. We also have a selection of mixed cases. The price range for each case is $18.95 - $39.95, plus shipping and handling. You can order directly by calling us at 1-888-244-3569 or through our website.
Nutritional and Dietary Information
None of our teas contain calories.
A brewed serving of tea contains an insignificant quantity of carbohydrates, lower than what can be detected or measured in laboratory analysis. Most of our unflavored hot tea products contain approximately one-half gram of carbohydrate while most flavored teas contain one-half to slightly less than one gram per serving. This small quantity is stated in Nutrition Fact labeling as either 0g or <1g Total Carbohydrate.
We do not use artificial sweeteners or sugar in any of our teas.
There are a few items that contain small amounts of the natural sweetener stevia.
The following blends contains Stevia (RebA) , a natural calorie-free sweetener:
Bigelow Botanicals Watermelon Cucumber Mint
Bigelow Botanicals Blood Orange Tangerine
Bigelow Botanicals Blueberry Citrus Basil
Bigelow Botanicals Blackberry Raspberry Hibiscus
Bigelow Botanicals Peach Lemonade with Acai
Hot Cinnamon Black Tea
Salted Caramel Black Tea
Toasted Coconut Black Tea
Caramel Apple Black Tea
Chamomile Vanilla Honey Herbal Tea

We do have some teas that contain a non-GMO soy lecithin in trace amounts. Soy lecithin helps disperse the flavoring into the tea while brewing to ensure consistent flavor throughout the whole cup. The packaging of these particular products label soy lecithin in parentheses to signify that it is a sub-ingredient of these flavorings and not a primary ingredient in any of our teas.
The following teas contain soy lecithin:

None of our flavors contain tree nuts of any kind, nor do we use any type of nut as an ingredient.
Yes. Black, green, and white teas, including decaffeinated versions, naturally contain caffeine. The decaffeination process cannot remove 100% of the caffeine, although on average, it safely removes approximately 99.6% of the caffeine. When a tea has undergone decaffeination, it is labeled as "Decaffeinated" Tea on our packaging.
Herbal teas are naturally caffeine free.
You can remove most of the caffeine yourself by following these steps. Bring water to a boil and pour over tea bag. Steep 60 seconds, remove tea bag and discard the water. Pour boiling water over tea bag again, and steep 1-2 minutes. This removes up to 60-65 percent of the caffeine from the tea.
Facts about Caffeine:
Did you know that tea contains only 1/4 to 1/2 the amount of caffeine contained in coffee?
Caffeine Averages of Milligrams per 8 oz. Serving
Coffee 100-120mg
American Breakfast 60-90mg
Black Tea/Oolong Tea 30-60 mg
Green Tea/White Tea 25-50 mg
Decaffeinated Tea 1- 8 mg
*NOTE: All Herbal Teas are naturally caffeine free
Pound for pound, tea contains more caffeine than coffee, but you get 200 cups of tea per pound versus 50-60 cups of coffee per pound. Black tea contains approximately 30-60 mg of caffeine per 8 fl oz serving while coffee contains approximately 100-120 mg per 8 fl oz serving. Therefore, tea contains ¼ to ½ the caffeine per cup.
We use an ethyl acetate process to decaffeinate our black teas. In the ethyl acetate (EA) decaffeination process, the tea leaves are moistened with water and ethyl acetate, an FDA approved solvent. The leaves are then dried and heated. The caffeine in the moistened leaves bonds with the ethyl acetate. During the drying process, the ethyl acetate and water is evaporated, taking the caffeine with them.
For our Green Teas, we use a carbon dioxide process. In the carbon dioxide (CO2) process, moistened tea leaves are first treated with heat and pressure and then treated with carbon dioxide, a natural gas. The carbon dioxide bonds with the caffeine and both are evaporated.
All decaffeinated dry tea leaves typically leave a caffeine residue of 0.1 percent - 0.4 percent. We periodically test our brewed decaffeinated teas (as prepared) for caffeine content and the results tend to be within that percentage range. No other residual substance testing is done.
There will be minimal loss of the antioxidant benefits in our Green Decaffeinated Teas.. We purchase a premium grade green tea for decaffeination, and we are currently using a CO2 decaffeination process which retains most of the polyphenols.
We would like to clarify that we do not make any medicinal claims on any of our teas, but we have gathered many articles on the health benefits of green tea. Medical Research has discovered that green tea naturally contains an antioxidant or polyphenols called (Epigallocatechin Gallate) or EGCG for short. These polyphenols appear to inhibit the growth of urokinase, an enzyme that promotes the growth of cancerous tumors. Extensive human studies are being conducted and many more benefits associated with drinking tea are being discovered.
Gluten is a protein found in these grains: barley, rye, oats and wheat.
Why Gluten-free Is Important:
Celiac Disease is a rare disorder caused by an intolerance to gluten, a protein found only in these grains: barley, rye, oats and wheat. Symptoms of Celiac Disease include diarrhea, nausea, weight loss, skin rash, joint or bone pain, abdominal bloating and anemia.
It is often misdiagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome or spastic colon and for this reason may be more prevalent than currently diagnosed. FDA estimates that between 40,000 to 60,000 people are diagnosed with this disorder, although 1.5 to 3 million people (0.4 - 1% of the American population) may not be aware they are intolerant to gluten.
Tea is a naturally gluten-free beverage; all current Bigelow Teas do not use any grains or gluten containing ingredients.
Oxalic acid is a naturally occurring component of tea, chocolate, beer, soybeans, wheat germ, some fruits and vegetables, and is especially high in spinach and other dark leaf greens. Oxalic acid is usually excreted in urine as a harmless by-product of digestion and assimilation, however it can also combine with minerals, and particularly with calcium, to form oxalates.
These oxalates are salt crystals that can be irritating to human tissue and can contribute to the formation of kidney and bladder stones. This is especially a concern for those who have kidney or bladder problems or those with an inability to properly absorb fat.
Of all the tea types, black and black decaffeinated teas contain the most oxalic acid, typically ranging from 12 to 30 mg per cup. Green, green decaffeinated and white teas typically contain 6 to 18 mg oxalic acid per cup. However test results tend to vary cup-to-cup and some of our independent laboratory testing of oxalic acid content has resulted in quantities too small to be measured or to contain none at all.
Herbal teas typically contain only 0 to 2 mg oxalic acid per cup.
At this time we do not test our teas for tannic acid.
Although tea does contain tannin-type substances these do not function as a tanning agent (for example where tannic acid is used for the tanning of leather).

Vitamin K is a naturally-occurring vitamin in the tea plant. Of all the tea types, green tea contains the highest amount, although as a fat-soluble vitamin, very little is present in a brewed cup. According to available information, one cup of brewed tea contains approximately 0.6 - 0.8 micrograms (mcg). Herbal teas do not contain any significant amounts of Vitamin K.
